My 5 month old has had a couple of "shaking" episodes while nursing to sleep. He'll be half asleep but still suckling and his body begins to shake-primarily the upper half of his body, including his arms. Usually it lasts 10-20 seconds and he nurses the whole time, eyes closed and it's not a violent shake. The best way to describe it is a tremor-almost an extension of the "quivering chin" thing I see sometimes. Doc says it's not a seizure and he is developing fine. Anyone else had this happen or know anything about it???

From what I understand, there are MANY babies who show symptoms like these who have a condition called Benign Neonatal Sleep Myoclonus. It was VERY difficult for me to find this condition and most pediatricians are not aware of it. I'm not a doctor, I was just a concerned Momma like many of you with a son who had shown these same symptoms between about 4-10 months old. Here is a link that was very helpful to me. Bring this condition up to your doctor if you are concerned, but take comfort in the fact that Benign neonatal sleep myoclonus does not require any treatment and typically goes away on its own without any long term effects to the child. My son is 18 months now and is perfectly happy and healthy after having these episodes frequently as an infant. If you find this info helpful, please feel free to re-post this in other forums with questions like this! A small forum like this was how I ended up finding the answer myself.

The same thing just happened to my daughter. She was sucking on the bottle half asleep when suddenly she began to shake her arms and head. Our pediatrician believes she is okay, however, she is sending her to a neurologist for further testing.

I'm not sure what the incidence is for others, but I personally did not have headaches nor migraines when I was pregnant or nursing my DD, and she still had benign myoclonus around 4 months old.
